Observations Flashcards
(12 cards)
What method are observations?
Non-experimental
What are the two main types of observations?
Observational technique and observational study
What is observational technique?
When other research methods involve observations
What is observational study?
When the entire study is an observation
What are the subtypes of observation?
Naturalistic or controlled, participants or non participant, overt or covert, structured or unstructured
What is naturalistic or controlled?
Is the observation carried out in a real life situation or controlled e.g. lab
What is participant or non participant
The researcher does or does not join the group being observered
What is overt or covert?
The role of the observer obvious or hidden from participants
What is structured or unstructured?
Behaviour observed recorded to a coding system developed prior to observation or just being observed.
What is a coding system?
Behaviour is operationalised by being broken into different categories
What is the systematic method event sampling?
No of times an event occurs in a target
What is the systematic method time sampling?
Decide a pre set time frame
