Variables And Hypothesis Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is the independent variable?
What the researcher manipulates/changes
What is the dependent variable?
What the researcher measures
What does operationalisation mean?
The process of making variables measurable
What are extraneous variables?
Variables that are not being investigated that can potentially affect the results (pre-empted by researcher)
What are confounding variables?
Unmeasured third variable that can influence the independent and dependent variables (not pre-empted by researcher)
What is a hypothesis?
A testable statement that can be proven or disproven
What is a directional hypothesis? (One tailed)
Testable statement based on previous research which predicts the direction of results
What is a non-directional hypothesis? (Two tailed)
Testable statement without previous research which predicts findings but not which way
What is a null hypothesis?
A statement suggesting no difference, effect or relationship will occur, any difference is due to chance
What is an experimental hypothesis?
A specific, testable statement about the relationship between variables in an experiment
