what is OCD
obsessions and or compulsions
behavioural characteristic of OCD

1. compulsions are repetitive
- feel compelled to repeat a behavior
- eg handwashing
2. compulsions reduce anxiety
- 10 of OCD have just compulsions
- majority use compulsive behavoiur to manage the anxiety caused by the obsession
- eg compulsive hand washing is carried out as a response to the obsessive fear of germs
3. avoidance
- attempt to reduce anxiety by keeping away from the situation that triggers it
- eg people who compulsory wash hands will avoid coming into contact with germs
emotional characteristics of OCD
(DAG)
1. Accompanying depression
- anxiety can be accompanied by low moods and lack of enjoyment
- compulsive behavior brings temporary relief from anxiety
2. anxiety and distress
- anxiety accompanies obsession and compulsions
- obsessive thoughts are unpleasant and frightening and the anxiety can be overwhelming
- the urge to repeat a behavior creates anxiety

- 90% of people with OCD have obsessive thoughts
- always unpleasant
- eg worries of contamination with dirt
2. cognitive coping strategies
- adopt coping strategies to cope with obsessions
- eg religious person may excessively pray to combat obsessive guilt
- distracts from everyday life
3. insight into excessive anxiety
- aware that their obsessions and compulsions are not rational
- people with OCD experience catastrophic thoughts about the worst case scenarios that might result if their anxieties were justified
