Describe the course of occipital artery.

A

It arises from the posterior aspect of the ECA opposite the origin of the facial artery and runs along the lower border of the posterior belly of digastric and then deep to the mastoid process. It crosses the apex of the posterior triangle to reach the posterior part of the scalp to supply it.

What are the branches of the occipital artery?

A

Two sternomastoid arteries, mastoid artery to mastoid air cells, auricular artery to back of the auricle, muscular arteries to stylohyoid and digastric muscles, stylomastoid artery in 60% of cases which enters the stylomastoid foramen to supply the tympanic cavity.
