After her death, Lennie flees to a predetermined hiding spot near the river. The other men discover what happened and form a lynch mob. George finds Lennie first and, in a heartbreaking moment, tells Lennie about their dream one last time before mercifully shooting him to spare him from a more brutal death at the hands of the mob.
