What is Occupational Health and Safety (OHS)?
Laws and processes used to protect employees from death disease and injury while at work
What act does Victoria operate under?
Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004
What are duties and responsibilities of employers?
- to control risks
- provide safety information
- allow for safe ways to do tasks
- create a safe workplace
What are the duties and responsibilities of employees?
- carry out work in a safe manner for yourself and others
- don’t interfere with safe operation of equipment/machinery
- wear required PPE
- report injury/illness immediately
- report faulty equipment/hazards
- follow instructions on how to work safely

Duty manager
Why is personal hygiene important?
Prevents the spreading of germs/diseases to others
How do you wash your hands?
- wet hands with water
- apply enough soap to cover all surfaces of hands
- rub palms together
- clean between fingers and back of hands
- clean dirty nails with a scrubbing brush, if available
- rinse both sides of hands
- dry off hands with clean towel
- use towel to turn the tap off
When should you wash your hands?
- before and after eating/preparing food
- before and after touching a sick person/cleaning up vomit or body fluids
- after blowing your nose
- before amd after treating cuts/wounds
- after touching rubbish, dirty surfaces/objects
What is the hierarchy of reporting?
- train controller
- fellow workers
- HSR
- manager
When must PPE be worn by drivers?
- when accessing the rail corridor
- sidings
- yards
- crossing tracks
What does the white sign with a blue circle mean?
Mandatory. PPE on the sign must been worn
What must you do when observing a hazard?
- must report to a supervisor immediately
- take immediate action to eliminate/reduce the hazard (where possible)
What is important when filling out a report?
- reports are legal documents
- use blue or black pen only
- do not use white out
- make corrections with a single line strikeout and initial
- the document must be Accurate, Brief and Clear
When can you write down notes for a report?
- when it is safe to do so
- primary concern is to drive the train safely
Where do you submit incident reports?
- via paper in correspondence box
- attach all relevant information (ie CAN notice)
- take photo and submit via email (for your records)
How can you receive a CAN notice?
- handed by station staff
- transmitted via radio
Is a CAN notice an authority to pass a defective signal?
No
What 2 pieces of info does the train controller give you when completing a TMM?
- fault category
- fault reference number
Who can you call if you don’t agree with the given category on a TMM?
Principal driver

Who is the interim site coordinator?
The driver, until emergency services arrive (excluding ambulance)
What is the function of the interim site coordinator?
- Understand nature of emergency and remove all people from danger (where safe to do so)
- Ensure appropriate emergency services are notified
- Maintain communication with metrol every 10-15 minutes
- Get assistance from other personnel if available
