Operant Condiioning Quiz Flashcards
(13 cards)
Relatively permanent change in behavior that occurs through experience
Learning
Reward/punishment.
The consequences of a behavior, change the probability of the behaviors occurrence
Operant conditioning
When a response is followed by satisfaction that response is more likely to occur the next time the stimulus is present
Law of Effect
What is the difference between Operant and classical conditioning?
Operant: reward/punishment
Classical: pairing something that doesn’t have meaning to something that does
Adding a positive. The frequency of a response increases because it is followed by a rewarding stimulus.
Positive reinforcement
Removing a negative. The frequency of a response increases because it is followed by the removal of an unpleasant stimulus
Negative reinforcement
Adding a negative. An unpleasant stimulus following a behavior decreases the likelihood that behavior will occur again.
Punishment
Example of positive reinforcement
Giving your child a piece of candy for washing their hands
Example of Negative reinforcement
The ding in your car to put on your seatbelt
Example of punishment
Spanking your child
Example of negative punishment
Hitting your sibling and getting grounded for a month
Modern educational psychology. Lived in William James’s basement
El Thorndike
Behavioralist that developed the theory of operant conditioning training pigeons and rats
B.F. Skinner
