Organ systems Flashcards
(26 cards)
What is part of the respiratory system?
Mouth, bronchus, bronchide, alveoli, diaphragm, heart, trachea, lungs, ribs, intercostal muscle.
What happens in the alveoli?
Gas exchange
What does the diaphragm do?
It moves up and down to bring air in and out.
What does the intercostal muscle do?
It allows the ribs to expand.
What do the ribs do?
Protect the lungs.
What is the trachea?
A wind pipe in the neck.
What is diffusion?
When particles move from a high concentration to a low concentration via a concentration gradient.
What is a tissue?
One type of cell that all work together to carry out a particular function.
What is an organ?
A group of tissues carrying out a joint function.
What is an organ system?
A group of organs that carry out a function.
What is part of the digestive system?
Mouth, salivary gland, liver, gall bladder, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, anus, oesophagus, stomach, pancreas.
What does the mouth do?
It mechanically breaks down food.
What does the salivary gland do?
Produces amylase.
What does the liver do?
Produce bile.
What does the gall bladder do?
Stores bile.
What does the small intestine do?
Absorbs nutrients.
What does the stomach do?
It churns food, has HCl that kills bacteria and has an environment for protease to work.
What does the pancreas do?
It makes enzymes.
What does lipase break down and into what?
Lipase breaks down fats into fatty acids and glycerol.
Where is lipase made?
In the pancreas and small intestine.
Where does lipase work?
Small intestine
What does protease break down and into what?
Protease breaks down proteins into amino acids.
Where is protease made?
The small intestine, stomach and pancreas.
Where does protease work?
In the stomach and small intestine.
