Organism Structure for exchange Flashcards
(20 cards)
What is the hierarchy of an organism?
cells – tissues – organ – organ system – organism
Name the 4 animal tissue types:
-Nervous tissue
-Connective tissue
-Muscle tissue
-Epithelial tissue
Nervous tissue?
Involved in transmitting information (made of neurons)
Connective tissue
connects, supports, binds, or separates other tissues or organs
Muscle tissue
makes up muscles. Three main types; skeletal, smooth, cardiac
Epithelial tissue
lines the outer surfaces of organs and vessels, and the inner surfaces of cavities in many internal organs
Heart- explain how it is made of multiple tissue types
contains muscle tissue and connective tissue. The muscle tissue helps the heart pump while the connective tissue supports and holds everything in place.
Lung- explain how it is made of multiple tissue types
contains epithelial tissue and connective tissue. Epithelial helps breathing functions while connective tissue keeps the lungs flexible and structurally sound.
Organ systems, how many, name at least 5:
11 organ systems.
- digestive system
- circulatory system
- respiratory system
- nervous system
- musculoskeletal system
- reproductive system
- lymphatic system
- urinary system
How do the organ systems work together?
Organ systems rely on each other to complete jobs and keep organisms alive (interdependence). For example, the respiratory and circulatory systems work together to provide the body with oxygen and to rid the body of CO2.
Lifestyle choices and health - How drinking has a positive and/or negative impact on health
can lead to addiction, liver damage, mental health problems and increased cancer risk, but helps people relax and improve social interaction
Lifestyle choices and health - How smoking has a positive and/or negative impact on health
short term stress relief, but leads to lung cancer, heart disease and respiratory problems
Lifestyle choices and health - How a balanced diet has a positive and/or negative impact on health
provided essential nutrients that support overall health and well-being
Lifestyle choices and health - how regular exercise has a positive and/or negative impact on health
improves cardiovascular health, boosts mood, and enhances physical fitness
Lifestyle choices and health - how prescription medication has a positive and/or negative impact on health
Taking prescription medication as directed can effectively manage and treat health conditions, but can lead to reliance on the drug and possible harmful side effects
Exchange surfaces – what are the 4 qualities
-Thin
-Moist
-Have a large surface area
-Rich blood supply
Exchange surfaces – Thin - how do they benefit/improve exchange
so that here is less tissue for the moving molecules to pass through.
Exchange surfaces – Moist - how do they benefit/improve exchange
molecules diffuse more efficiently through a liquid medium
Exchange surfaces – Large surface area - how do they benefit/improve exchange
large surface area means there is a lot of area molecules can pass through, aiding efficiency.
Exchange surfaces – rich blood supply - how do they benefit/improve exchange
a rich blood supply ensures that the exchanged substances are quickly transported away
