Osmoregulation Flashcards
What does osmoregulation do?
Keeps H2o/ Ions/ wastes at tolerable levels
What organs are we talking about in humans with osmoregulation?
Kidneys/ excretory System
Is osmoregulation exclusive?
Not exclusive
Are all organs connected?
all organs are connected
What does waste contain?
Waste contains nitrogen
Do proteins have nitrogen?
yes proteins do have nitrogen
What should you think of when you hear amino acid?
Nitrogen
What is the cleave off of an amino group to use an amino acid called?
Deamination
What is invertebratess?
Deamination by digestive gland
What organ deaminates in vertebrates?
liver
what does the deamination of proteins and amino acid lead to?
the production of ammonia
Who excretes the very toxic ammonia?
Fish and a lot of aquatic organisms
What is excreted by humans, mammals, sharks and some fish?
Urea
Does it take more energy to excrete something less toxic?
yes
Is uric acid soluble in water?
no but is not toxic , can be excreted in solid form
Is uric acid found in a cleidoic egg?
yes
ES or excretory structure system uses at least 3 mechanisms
Filtration/osmotic pressure- forces body into ES via force or osmotic pressure. (pulls fluids into ES with high solute concentration.) Solutes=filtrate
Reabsorption/ Secretion - active transport of needed components back into body from ES.
Excretion-removal of unwanted compounds from body (urine)
What is one of the most common invertebrate excretory systems?
Nephridium
Why are there different types of ES among arthropods?
because of the different species
Crustaceans use 3 processes which are?
Reabsorption excretion and filtration
where do arthropods excrete out of
the nephridia pore
what do insects and spiders have?
malpighian tubules found further behind the gastric seca filtration is absent
where is reabsorption most in insects
the hindgut
what is excreted in insects and spiders
pellet of both the feces and urine
