What is a Preposition?
A word used before a noun, a noun phrase or a pronoun, connecting it to another word.
e.g. Ollie jumped in the lake, Anne drove slowly down the road.
What is a Phrasal Verb?
An idiomatic phrase consisting of a verb and another element, typically either an adverb, as in: “break down”, or a preposition, for example: “see to”, or a combination of both, such as: “look down on”.

What is a Conjunction?
a word that connects other words, phrases, or clauses within a sentence.
They act as bridges, linking ideas together and creating more complex and flowing sentences.
What is an Interjection?
an abrupt remark, especially as an aside or interruption.
Other examples include: Ouch!, Oops!, Oh dear! etc.
What are Discourse Markers?
words and phrases that are used to manage and organize the structure of discourse. Discourse markers are also known as linking words, linking phrases or sentence connectors.
Linkers - cause & effect, emphasising, contradiction.
Definite article – ‘the’
article is used to refer directly to a specific, or definite, noun or a group of nouns
the desk in Alicja’s classroom, the classrooms in the school where Alicja works.
Indefinite article – ‘a/an’
used when we’re not being definite about something, for instance when we refer to a non-specific noun or a group of nouns.
Jack eats an apple every day.
What is a Determiner?
a modifying word that determines the kind of reference a noun or noun group has

we also call these quantifiers, as they quantify nouns.
ordinal numbers
We use ordinal numbers to order things. Examples are: first, second, third, and so on.
cardinal numbers
these numbers relate to quantity and we use them for counting. Examples are: one, two, three, and so on.
note that zero isn’t a cardinal number, the first cardinal number is one.
nominal numbers
Nominal numbers are numerals used as labels to identify or name things uniquely.
Examples include driver’s licence numbers, ZIP or postal codes and bank account and sort codes.
What is Reported Speech?
used when telling someone what another person has said. It involves small changes to pronouns and verbs and adding information about who said what we’re reporting.
What is Direct Speech?
when someone’s exact words are written down, enclosed in quotation marks, as if the reader is hearing the speaker’s words directly
What is the Active Voice?
where the noun in a sentence is made the oject of a sentence rather than the subject.
Ollie broke the window. (Present Simple)
What is the Passive Voice?
where the noun in a sentence is made the subject of a sentence rather than the object.
The window was broken by Ollie.
What is a Demonstrative?
a word, typically a pronoun or adjective, used to point out or specify a particular entity or thing. In grammar, demonstratives like “this,” “that,” “these,” and “those” are used to indicate the distance.
What are Collocations? -
natural combination of words that are often used together. These combinations sound correct to native speakers and are typically more common or idiomatic than others.
