Ovary Flashcards
(12 cards)
1
Q
Where are the ovaries located?
A
In the ovarian fossa (pelvic sidewall), bounded by: - Ureter (posterior) - External iliac vessels (anterior) - Uterine artery (medial).
2
Q
What is the ovarian fossa?
A
A depression on the pelvic sidewall where the ovary sits, near the obturator nerve (pain referral in ovarian pathology).
3
Q
External features of the ovary
A
- Almond-shaped (3-5 cm) - Two surfaces (medial/lateral) - Two borders (anterior/posterior) - Two poles (tubal/uterine).
4
Q
Relations of the ovary
A
- Anterior: Mesovarium - Posterior: Ureter, internal iliac vessels - Superior: Fallopian tube - Inferior: Pelvic floor.
5
Q
Tubal extremity of the ovary
A
- Attached to suspensory ligament (carries ovarian vessels) - Connects to fimbriae of fallopian tube.
6
Q
Uterine extremity of the ovary
A
- Attached to ovarian ligament (remnant of gubernaculum) - Anchors ovary to uterus.
7
Q
Medial surface of the ovary
A
- Faces uterus - Covered by mesovarium (part of broad ligament).
8
Q
Lateral surface of the ovary
A
- Contacts pelvic sidewall - Adjacent to obturator internus muscle.
9
Q
Anterior border of the ovary
A
- Attached to mesovarium - Entry point for ovarian vessels/nerves.
10
Q
Posterior border of the ovary
A
- Free and convex - Related to ureter and internal iliac vessels.
11
Q
Arterial supply of the ovary
A
- Ovarian artery (from abdominal aorta) - Anastomoses with uterine artery.
12
Q
Venous drainage of the ovary
A
- Right ovarian vein → IVC - Left ovarian vein → Left renal vein (higher thrombosis risk).
