Oxidative phosphorylation Flashcards
What are some examples of oxidation reactions?
Add O2 to the molecule - (very rare in metabolism)
Remove an electron
Remove a pair of hydrogen atoms
What are some examples of hydrogen acceptor cofactors?
NAD+, FAD, NADP+
Where does oxidative phosphorylation occur?
In the inner compartments of the mitochondria, mainly in inner mitochondrial membrane
What parts of the electron chain are H pair acceptors?
Flavin cofactors
Coenzyme Q
What parts of electron chain are electron acceptors?
Iron sulphur proteins
Cytochrome proteins
What is an oxido-reduction potential?
The ability of a carrier to donate its electrons to another electron acceptor molecule
Electrons flow from a carrier with a -E0 value to one with a more +E0 value
What is the order of oxi-red carriers in the electron transport chain?
NAD→flavin→CoQ→CYT b→cyt C→cyt A→O2
so travels from lowest oxi-reduction potential to highest
Whta does the movement of protons do to the membrane?
Cause H+ conc gradient and a voltage gradient across inner membrane
What are the inhibitors and uncouplers of oxidative phosphorylation?
Inhib: CN-, rotenone and CO
Uncoup: dinitrophenol (DNP) and thermogenin protein in brown adipose tissue
What stages does ATP come from?
2 - glycolysis
5 - pyruvate dehydrogense
20 - TCA cycle
5 or 3 - glycolysis (NADH)
