Oxygenation 1/3 Flashcards
(17 cards)
What is the function of the respiratory system?
Gas exchange
What chain of events occurs during oxygenation?
Oxygen from inspired air diffuses from alveoli in the lung into the blood in the pulmonary capillaries
How is carbon dioxide produced and exhaled?
Produced during cell metabolism diffuses from the blood into the alveoli and is exhaled
5 things that occur during inspiration:
- Diagphragm and intercostals contract
- Thoracic cavity size increases
- Volume of lungs increaes
- Intrapulmonary pressure decreases
- Air rushes into the lungs to equalize pressure
4 things that occur during expiration:
- Diaphragm and intercostals relax
- Volume of lungs decreaes
- Intrapulmoary pressure rises
- Air is expelled
When does gas exchange occur?
After the alveoli are ventilated
What affects diffusion?
Pressure differences in the gases on each side of the respiratory membranes
Where does diffusion of oxygen occur?
From the alveoli into the pulmonary blood vessels
Where does diffusion of carbon dioxide occur?
From the pulmonary blood vessels into the alveoli
What happens to the remaining oxygen?
Dissolved and transported to plasma and cells
Where is oxygen transported from/to?
From lungs to tissues
Percentage of O2 that combines with hemoglobin in RBC’s and carried to tissues as oxyhemoglobin.
97%
Where must CO2 be transported from/to
Transported from tissues to lungs
How is CO2 produces and where?
Continually, in the process of cell metabolism
Percentage carried inside the RBC’s as bicarbonate…
65%
Percentage that combines with hemoglobin as carbhemoglobin…
30%
Percentage transported in solution in plasma as carbonic acid…
5%
