Cognitive behavioural therapy CBT
Focuses on challenging negatives thoughts about oneself, the world, and the future
May be given homework to record when they enjoyed an event or when people were nice to them ‘patient as a scientist’

Patients asked to keep diary of thoughts and feelings associated with any negative events
Especially include automatic negative thoughts
Rate how much they believed it
Asked to challenge dysfunctional automatic thoughts ‘where is the evidence for x’ ‘what’s the worst that can happen if x was true’

D=disputing irrational thoughts and beliefs

E= effective new beliefs replaces the irrational ones

Effective with research support
Client actively involved in recovery
Can use skills in new situations as have learnt to help themselves
Particularly good when paired with drug treatment

Clients can become therapist dependent
Not effective for people resistant to chance or for people with high stress levels in response to genuinely difficult life circumstances
