P1 Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is malleability?
Malleability is the ability of a material to be worked into different shapes.
What does lustre refer to?
Lustre refers to shininess, or the ability to reflect light.
What is ductility?
Ductility is the ability of a material to be stretched out into wires.
What does sonorous mean?
Sonorous describes a material that makes a ringing sound if it is struck.
What is a metal?
A metal (konganuku) is an element that is usually hard, lustrous, malleable, ductile, and has good electrical and thermal conductivity.
What is a non-metal?
A non-metal (konu-kore) is an element that does not display all the chemical and physical properties associated with metals.
What is a group in the periodic table?
A group is a column in the periodic table where all elements have similar properties and the same number of valence electrons.
What is a period in the periodic table?
A period is a row in the periodic table where elements have the same number of electron shells but may have very different properties.
What are transition metals?
Transition metals are metals that can bond with other elements using more than just their valence electrons, often forming colourful compounds.
