p2 Kidneys Flashcards
(5 cards)
What hormone controls water levels, where is it produced
ADH, pituitart gland in the brain
what happens in body if water concentration is too high
-pituitary gland detects water levls are too high
-less ADH is produced
-so less water is reabsorbed into the blood by the kidney tubules (tubules are less permeable)
-so more urine is produced
-water concentration is restored to normal level
what happens in body if water concentration is too low
-pituitary goand detecs thats water levels are too low
-more ADH is released
-more water is reabsorbed back into the blood by the kidney tubules (tubules are more permeable)
-little urine produced
-water concentration is restored to a normal level
List some advantages of dialysis
-allows person with kidney failure to maintain their health
-no overall change in blood glucose levels
List disadvantages of dialysis
-requires highly specialised and highly expensive machinery
-patient must be connected 2-3 times a week for 4-6 hours at a time
-mainly happens in hospital
-
