How to approach Paper 2 question 1b
Reflective commentary
Like your own piece of writing, your commentary should be concise and to the point. Attemt to match the points you make in your commentary to the key focuses in the original question.
For example:
* In what way did I write in an appropriate style and format?
* Did I include the details requested? How did I show this?
* In what way did I demonstrate my outlook (my viewpoint)? What linguistic choices (words, phrases) helped me achieve this?
* What mood did I create, and how did I achieve this?
A good commentary should:
- explain concisely how your writing matches the task, audience and purpose set by the brief in the question
- Keep in mind the decisions you have made and the techniques you have used to meet the brief
- comment (as appropriate) on the form, structure and language you used
- support your comments with appropriate references and quotations
- be around 250 words.
Structuring commentary
1) Work through the text written one paragraph or section at a
time, following its structure.
+ Allows to write methodically, covering everything you have done.
- May end up commenting on the same techniques several times.
2) Work through the different elements mentioned in the task.
+ Can cover several references. More likely to be efficient and concise.
- Might spend too much time on one element and not leave enough time to write about other points. Can be challenging to make several references in one sentence or paragraph.
