They have to be really close together which needs lots of energy- high temperatures and pressures.

How did scientists discover fusion in the early 20th century?
A
Scientist believed the sun just burned its own material, the in the 19th century they released that it would be impossible as the dual would have ran out a long time ago.
In the 20th century Einstein realised mass could be converted into energy, people eventually realised that the sun burned form fusion.
