Pacifism Flashcards
(5 cards)
What is pacifism?
The belief that all violence, including war, can rarely be justified. Pacifists aim to resolve conflict peacefully and non-violently. Many are also conscientious objectors (refuse to fight in wars).
What are Christian views on pacifism?
Many Christians support pacifism because Jesus taught love, peace, and non-violence. Groups like Quakers are committed to total pacifism. However, some Christians believe war may be necessary to stop greater evil or protect the innocent.
Contrasting beliefs about pacifism (Christianity and Islam):
Some Christians, like Quakers, believe in complete pacifism and that all violence is wrong. They follow Jesus’ teachings to love enemies and avoid conflict. In contrast, some Muslims believe violence is allowed as a last resort in self-defence. Islam encourages peace but permits fighting to defend the faith and protect others if peaceful options fail.
Quote on promoting non-violence (Christianity):
“If someone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.”
– Matthew 5:39
Quote on peace (Islam):
“But if the enemy inclines towards peace, you also incline towards it.”
– Qur’an 8:61
