Reasons for War Flashcards
(7 cards)
What are three common reasons for war?
Greed – to gain land, resources, or power.
Self-defence – to protect one’s country or people from attack.
Retaliation – deliberately harming someone as a response to being wronged or attacked.
What do Christians believe about greed as a reason for war?
Christianity teaches that greed is morally wrong. Wars fought for greed are not justified, as they go against biblical values such as love and justice. Jesus warned against greed and encouraged caring for others.
Quote about greed:
“For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.”
– 1 Timothy 6:10
What do Christians believe about self-defence as a reason for war?
Many Christians believe war can be justified in self-defence if it protects the innocent and prevents harm to yourself or others. They believe they have a right to defend their values and beliefs.
Quote about self-defence and protecting others:
“Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed.”
– Psalm 82:3
What do Christians believe about retaliation as a reason for war?
Christianity generally discourages retaliation. Jesus taught forgiveness and turning the other cheek.
