What causes Croup?
Parainfluenza Virus
How does Croup present?
Barking cough, Harsh intermittent stridor, no drooling
On examination of Croup with X-ray what sign is seen?
Steeple sign (Narrow Trachea)
What is the management of Croup?
Oral Dexamethasone + Nebulised Adrenaline if severe
What is Epiglottitis caused by?
H. Influenzae
How does Epiglottitis present?
Sudden onset,
No cough,
Soft constant stridor,
drooling,
Unable to swallow
How is Epiglottitis treated?
IV ceftriaxone + oxygen and Immediate senior ENT help.
(DO NOT examine throat)
What cases Bronchiolitis?
RSV
How does Bronchiolitis present and when?
1st or 2nd winter
- Feeding difficulties,
- Increased work of breathing,
- Wheeze.
What is the management of Bronchiolitis?
Supportive oxygen and NG tube for feeding
What causes Whooping Cough?
Bordetella pertussis
What is the typical presentation of whooping cough?
- 2-3 days corzyal symptoms,
- acute cough,
- Inspiratory whoop,
WORSE AT NIGHT, POST COUGH VOMITING
How is Whooping cough Diagnosed?
nasal swab
What is the management of Whooping Cough?
anything that ends in -cin. (oral macrolides)
Oral erythromycin, Azithromycin, Clarithromycin
