Paper 2- Alkenes Flashcards
(12 cards)
What is the test for an alkene?
Add bromine water and shake
Will change from orange to colourless if molecule is an alkene
What is an electrophile?
An electron pair acceptor
Define electrophilic addition
A reaction in which a carbon-carbon double bond becomes saturated and in which the initial reaction is an attack by an electrophile
Why are alkenes more reactive than alkanes?
The double bond is an electron rich area
What is an addition reaction?
A reaction in which a reactant is added to an unsaturated molecule to make a saturated molecule
What is the reagent and conditions for the electrophilic addition of hydrogen bromide to ethene?
Reagent: Hydrogen bromide
Conditions: Gaseous hydrogen bromide
What is the reagent and conditions for the electrophilic addition of bromine to ethene?
Reagent: Bromine
Conditions: Aqueous bromine
What is the reagent and conditions for the electrophilic addition of sulfuric acid to ethene?
Reagent: Sulfuric acid
Conditions: Cold concentrated sulfuric acid
How is the product of the electrophilic addition of ethene and sulfuric acid converted into ethanol?
Add water and refulx
What is the role of sulfuric acid in the conversion of ethene into ethanol?
Catalyst
Which carbocation is the most stable?
Tertiary
What are the products of addition polymerisation?
One large molecule and NO other substances are formed
