Talk about social class in pre-industrial Britain

A
  • Two class society, Upper and Lower
  • LC played football on holy days as it was there day off, and they were players in cricket and runners in athletics
    -UC didn’t play football as it was too rough however they plated real tennis which was sophisticated with complex rules which required money to participate in, they were also patrons for athletics

Talk about Gender in Pre- Industrial Britain

A

-Women were seen as the weaker sex and were not meant to be strenuous or dangerous,
- Couldn’t take part in football, real tennis or cricket as it was seen as too strenuous
- UC women took part in archery and hawking, LC women took part in smock racing

A

-Very little law and order
-LC: Football: Only rule was to not murder
-UC: Real tennis and Cricket: UC made rules complex, restricted to noblemen and royalty, greater access to facilities as law favoured UC

  • UC were well educated and literate, LC uneducated and illiterate
  • Football: Low literacy needed as there were limited rules and simple rules, easy accessible
    -Real Tennis and Cricket: good education and literacy needed to understand complexity of rules and the games, LC limited access

A

-LC worked long hours and only had holy days pff, UC had more time to take part in activities
-Football: LC played only on holy days
-Real Tennis and Cricket: UC had more time to take part in sports so can play in complex games that lasted over a longer period of time

A

-LC had less many so could only do basic activities with limited equipment, UC had more money so more access to equipment and facilities
-Football: LC played basic activities that required limited equipment
- Real Tennis and Cricket: UC had more money so could access specialist equipment and better facilities e.g. real tennis court

A

-LC no access to transport could only walk, Uc had access to horse and carriage
-Football: LC had no transport so was played locally and within walking distance
-Real Tennis and Cricket: UC could travel to better facilities and competitive matches, LC cant
