Sex role stereotypes and androgyny
Sex role stereotypes:
- set of social norms about how men and women should behave
- there learnt from explicit teaching by parents and others in society e.g “boys don’t cry”
- also learn implicitly by imitating same sex models
Androgyny:
- concept of someone being psychologically healthy if they avoid sex role stereotypes and have masculine and feminine behaviours
- Bem used Bems sex role inventory (BSRI) which had 40 personality traits then a person would have to rate themselves based on that trait from 1 to 7.
- examples of traits were ‘independent’ and ‘affectionate’
- then were categorised as masculine, feminine or androgynous which bem argued was the desirable result
