Paper And Boards Properties Flashcards
Layout Paper
Slightly transparent, greater opacity then tracing paper, off-white colour, not as strong as tracing paper.
Tracing Paper
Semi transparent, greater opacity than in colour, acid used to treat paper, resistant to grease, relatively strong.
Corrugated card
Two outer layers (liners) and a corrugated medium. Reliable, directionally ridged, good strength to weight ratio, shock absorbing, lightweight, thermal insulator.
Cartridge paper:
Creamy off-white colour, slightly textured finish, takes various drawing mediums well.
Watercolour paper
Highly absorbent, little or no sizing, can withstand large amounts of water, matt finish
Inkjet paper
Has a non porous treated surface so image stays sharp.
Laser paper
Has a surface coating designed to permit the plastic in the toner to melt and bond to the surface of the paper.
Photographic paper
Has a photosensitive coating which reacts to light and an image develops over a short time.
Duplex board
Used for packaging, top layer is usually white but is available in a wide range of colours, food safe, oil resistant, can be coated to increase water resistance and give a gloss waxy finish.
Bleached card
Chemically treated to brighten surface to make it suitable for high quality printing Prints well and has a luxurious feel.
Bleed-proof paper
Similar to cartridge paper but has a bleed proof layer on one side so colours do not run. Used for hand drawn marker renderings.
Mount Board
Made from compressed fine cotton fibres to produce a rigid board. Structurally strong, available in a wide range of colours, white core can be seen when cut at a 45° angle, used for final model making.
Foil backed and laminated card
Card with polymer film or foil applied to either one side or both sides to provide a water resistant and/or heat insulting layer. The foil or laminate needs to be removed before recycling.
Metal effect card
High-quality card with a thin metal effect layer applied to the outer surface for enhanced aesthetics. Can be embossed.
Moulded paper pulp
Recycled paper pulp moulded when wet and dried to a specific shape. Usually smooth on the visible inside surface and rough texture on the outer surface.
Foam board
Two outer layers of card with a foam middle core, available in a range of thicknesses.
Fluted PP sheet
Extruded sheet with integral flutes or corrugating. Lightweight and easily bend along the flutes.
Translucent PP sheet
An extremely tough polymer sheet. Can be scored before bending to produce a plastic hinge, which can be folded many times . Virtually impossible to tear, water resistant.
Styrofoam
Dense, closed cell form, commonly blue in colour. Can be cut, shaped and sanded with standard workshop tools.
LDPE
Tough, available in thin sheet form, transparent, good chemical resistance, flexible.
Plastazote foam
Closed cell polyethylene foam, tough, flexible, good impact resistance, impermeable to liquids.
Cellulose acetate
Transparent, tough, naturally biodegrades
Polylactide
Transparent, tough, naturally biodegrades
