What is a non-ferrous metals?
A metal that does not contain iron. Non ferrous metals are not magnetic and do not rust.
What is a ferrous metal?
A metal containing iron and carbon. Ferrous metals are magnetic and will rust.
What is an alloy:
A metal made of two or more metals, or combining two or more elements, one of which is a metal.
Aluminum
Lightweight, ductile, malleable, corrosion resistant, electrical and thermal conductor, can be MIG and TIG heat welded.
Melting point of Aluminium
660°C
Copper
Ductile, malleable, tough, corrosion resistant, good electrical and thermal conductor, can be soldered and brazed.
Copper melting point
1083 °C
Zinc
Low melting point, good corrosion resistance.
Zinc melting point
420 °C
Silver
Malleable, ductile, corrosion resistant, can be soldered.
Silver melting point
962 °C
Gold
Ductile, malleable, corrosion resistant, can be soldered.
Gold melting point
1063 °C
Titanium
Hard, unreactive, corrosion resistant, similar tensile strength to steel, lightweight, high melting point.
Titanium melting point
1668 °C
Tin
Ductile, malleable, low melting point, corrosion resistant.
Tin melting point
232 °C
Low carbon steel
Ductile, high tensile strength, tough, malleable, poor resistance to corrosion
Low carbon steel carbon content
0.15%-0.30%
Low carbon steel melting point
1427 °C
Medium carbon steel
Harder than low carbon steel but less ductile, malleable, tough.
Medium carbon steel carbon content
0.30%-0.70%
Cast Iron
Hard outer skin, brittle core, good under compression.
Cast iron carbon content
3.5% carbon
