Parasitology Terminology Flashcards
(22 cards)
Parasitiasis vs. Parasitiosis?
- Parasitiasis = parasite in/on host with NO outward signs
- Parasitiosis = parasite in/on host with OBVIOUS harm
What is a definitive host?
host that has had parasite for a while, parasite is mature & reproducing.
What is an intermediate host?
host that has had parasite for a short while, parasite still larval/immature & non-reproducing.
What is a paratenic host?
host that transports the parasite w/o any development (usually encysted)
What is an aberrant parasite?
parasite found in unusual location
What is an incidental parasite?
parasite found on unusual/unexpected host
What is a facultative parasite?
parasite was once free-living, but became parasite on host
What is a periodic parasite?
parasite that visits hosts for short periods, frequently
What is an obligatory parasite?
parasite that cannot survive without its host, must always be on host
What does it mean to be monoxenous or homoxenous?
parasite has only one, specific host
What does it mean to be stenoxenous?
parasite has narrow range of hosts
What does it mean to be euryxenous?
parasite has broad range of hosts
What is a pre-patent period in reference to parasites?
the time from infection to becoming a reproducing adult
What are the differences in morphology between insects vs. arachnids?
- insects = 6 legs, 3 body parts
- arachnids = 8 legs, 2 body parts
What are symbionts?
organisms living in a close relationship with another organism (host + parasite)
What is symbiosis?
organisms of at least 2 different species living together, whether temporarily or permanently
What is phoresis?
“act of carrying”
- relationship where larger carries smaller
What is commensalism?
relationship where one benefits & other is not affected
What is parasitism?
when a parasite has metabolic dependence on its host
What are hirudineans?
leeches
Direct lifecycle vs. indirect lifecycle?
- Direct = no int. host, +/- free-living stages
- Indirect = has 2+ hosts (could be transport, int., etc)
What does “myriapoda” refer to?
centipedes & millipedes
