Particle Physics Flashcards
(12 cards)
History of the atom, what order
Democritus suggestion, Dalton simple idea, Thompson plum pudding, Rutherfords nuclear model, Bohrs model with energy levels
Describe the observations of the alpha scattering experiment
Most particles went straight through the foil
Some were deflected by less than 90 degrees
Very few were deflected by more than 90 degrees
Conclusions made from the alpha scattering experiment
-Most of the atom is empty space
-There is a large concentration of positive charge in the atom
-Most of the mass and charge of atom is concentrated in the centre
What is thermionic emission
Release of electrons from a surface as it is heated
What is a cathode ray
A beam of fast moving electrons
What can cathode rays do
They can produce diffraction patterns which is useful when telling us about crystal structures
What is the photoelectric effect
Phenomenon in which electrons are released from a metal surface due to exposure from electromagnetic radiation
How does a GM tube work
Incoming radiation ionises gas and electrons move towards anode which produces an electric pulse, then the electrons become deionised due to the electrodes
What does CMS do
Mini black holes, dark matter, supersymmetry, gravitons
What does LHCb do
Looks for decays of the bottom quar. Finding out why our universe seems to contain more matter than antimatter
What does ALICE do
proton-proton collisions, collisions of heavy ions, quark gluon plasma
