Parts of the bone Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is the epiphysis?
The rounded end of the bone (proximal & distal); contains spongy bone and red marrow.
What is the diaphysis?
The shaft of the bone; made of compact bone surrounding the medullary cavity.
What is the metaphysis?
The flared area between the epiphysis and diaphysis; contains the growth plate (epiphyseal plate).
What is the epiphyseal plate (line)?
A cartilage plate in children/teens where bone growth occurs; becomes a line in adults after fusion.
What is articular cartilage?
Smooth cartilage covering the ends of bones at joints; reduces friction and absorbs shock.
What is the periosteum?
A tough, fibrous outer membrane covering the bone (except at joints); contains nerves and blood vessels.
What is the endosteum?
A thin membrane lining the medullary cavity (inside the bone).
What is the medullary cavity?
Central hollow space in the diaphysis; contains yellow marrow (fat storage).
What is compact bone (cortical bone)?
Dense, strong bone found in the diaphysis; provides strength.
What is spongy bone (cancellous bone)?
Porous bone found in the epiphysis; contains red marrow for blood cell production.
What is a nutrient foramen?
Small openings for blood vessels to enter and nourish the bone.
