Parts of the Cell Flashcards
(12 cards)
1
Q
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
A
- Synthesizes protein for secretion out of cell.
- Consists of flattened membrane sacs called cisternae full of 80S ribosomes
2
Q
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
A
- Produces other substances needed by the cell such as facts or steroids
- Provides exoskeleton
3
Q
Nucleous
A
- Spherical structures within the nucleus
- Produce and assemble the cell’s ribosomes
- Where RNA genes are transcribed
4
Q
Golgi Apparatus
A
- Processes proteins brought by the vesicles from the ReR and sends them through vesicles to be secreted
5
Q
Vesicles
A
- Small vacuoles used for transportation of materials in the cell
6
Q
Lysosomes
A
- Contain digestive enzymes, used for breaking down organelles or the cell itself
7
Q
Flagellum
A
- Only in animals
- Used for movement
- Contains a ring of 9 double microtubules along with 2 bigger main ones
- Large but singular
8
Q
Cilia
A
- Animals only
- Smaller, many present in the cell
- Can be used for movement or for creating currents near the cell
9
Q
Microtubules
A
- Small cylindrical figures
- Part of the structure of both cilia and flagellum
- Many roles such as moving chromosomes during cell division
10
Q
Centrioles
A
- Made up of 2 groups of 9 triple microtubules
- Form an anchor point for microtubules during cell division
- Mainly found in animal cells
11
Q
Vacuoles
A
- In animal cells, vacuoles are generally small and help sequester waste products.
- In plant cells, vacuoles help maintain water balance
12
Q
Chloroplasts
A
- Carry out photosynthesis, meaning the conversion of light energy into chemical energy used to sustain the cell
- Their structure is called chlorophyll and it allows them to trap solar energy
- Synthesize fatty acids
