dental caries
Morphology of dental caries?
demineralization (enamel and dentin) of the tooth structure
Congenitally abnormality due to syphilis?
Hutchinson’s teeth
Malformation of the roof of the mouth on the bony palate?
torus palatinus
Cause of dental caries?
acidic metabolites of fermenting sugars by bacteria
When is gingivitis most severe?
adolescence (think braces)
Gingivitis is caused by:
dental plaques (biofilm) and calculus (tartar, build up of plaque)
Treatment of gingivitis:
REVERSIBLE process, reduce plaque
Periodontitis is usually caused by anaerobic organisms - which ones?
Aggregatibacter, Porphyromonas, Prevotella
Which systemic diseases does periodontitis often present with?
AIDS, leukemia, Crohn’s, diabetes, Down’s, sarcoidosis
General description of periodontitis:
Gums are far receded, teeth look very spread out
Exceedingly painful, superficial oral mucosa ulcerations are called?
Apthous ulcers or canker sores
When are apthous ulcers most common?
first 2 decades of life
What diseases are apthous ulcers associated with?
Celiacs, Behcet, IBD
Types of fibrous proliferative lesions?
Irritation fibroma (traumatic) or pyogenic granuloma (pregnancy tumor)
Purple/red lesion found on gingiva, ulcerated, and may be common in pregnant women?
Pyogenic granuloma
HSV infections often prevent with a prodrome of what?
Lymphadenopathy, fever, anorexia, irritability
Morphology of HSV infection:
acantholysis (loss of intracellular connections)
intranucelar viral inclusions - forms multinucleat polykarons with glassy cytoplasm
Test for diagnosis of HSV?
Tzank test
Where might HSV lay latent?
trigeminal ganglion
Oral changes in scarlet fever:
strawberry or raspberry tongue
due to group A strep
Oral changes in measles:
cough, coryza, conjunctivitis, Koplik spots
Warthin-Finkelday cells
Oral changes in mononucleosis:
caused by EBV
acute pharyngitis, cervical LAD, palatal petechiae
Oral changes in erythema multiforme:
may follow infection, drugs, cancer (appears in mouth first)
widespread = Stevens Johnson syndrome
