Pathology - Salivary Glands Flashcards
(22 cards)
Most common cause of xerostomia?
Medications!
Describe the syndrome: dry eyes, bilateral enlarged salivary glands, SS Ro and La antibodies present
Sjogren Syndrome
Complications of xerostomia?
Risk of cavities and candidiasis
How would sialadenitis present if caused by mumps?
Orchitis, pancreatitis, aspetic meningitis, BILATERAL parotid glands swollen
Most common lesion of the salivary glands?
Mucocele
Morphology of a mucocele?
large lump filled with saliva, BLUE
pseudocysts (no epithelium)
What is a ranula?
type of mucocele WITH epithelium
called “plunging” when it’s in the mylohyoid muscle
Most common cause of sialadentitis?
Sialoliths (stones in the salivary glands)
Most common bacterial infections leading to sialadentitis?
Staph aureus and Strep viridans
Most common benign neoplasm of the salivary gland?
Pleomorphic adenoma
Most common malignancy of salivary glands?
Mucoepidermoid
typical patient for a salivary tumor
Adult female 50-70
Name the tumor: biphasic, mixed, may appear blue, most often in the parotid gland
Pleomorphic adenoma (benign)
Genetic mutation in pleomorphic adenomas?
PLAG1 (over expression)
If a pleomorphic adenoma becomes malignant, what type of cancer?
adenocarcinoma - may see facial nerve damage
Name the tumor: male, 50-70, smoker, only in the parotid gland, fluctuant
Warthin tumor (benign)
Morphology of a warthin tumor?
Oncocytic = lots of mitochondria
may appear bilateral
mucin +
Name the tumor: biphasic, high invasive, mixed tumor, usually in the parotid gland
Mucoepidermoid tumor (malignant)
Genetic basis of a mucoepidermoid tumor?
translocation (11;18)(q21:p13)
MECT-1/MAML fusion gene - know this!
Name the tumor: found in minor salivary glands, small dark nuclei with scant cytoplasm, hyaline membrane, in perineural spaces, presents with PAIN
Adenoid cystic carcinoma (malignant)
Name the tumor: typically in the parotid gland, multicentric, looks like serous cells, clear cytoplasm
Acinic cell carcinoma (good survival rate)
Which type of tumor is chromogranin +?
Neuroendocrine tumors – adenoid cystic carcinoma?
