Q

Why is the great power of the Book of Abraham overlooked?

What does the Book of Abraham cover that is very important? (3)

A

The great power of the book is sometimes overlooked precisely because its five chapters offer tantalizing tidbits about subjects that may seem mysterious
or forbidding—Egypt and the universe.

But the book of Abraham is a powerful, Christ-centered text that has as its main
themes:
1. the eternal nature of the Abrahamic covenant,
2. the preeminence of Jesus Christ as represented even in the vast scheme of planets and stars,
3. And the role of Jesus Christ in the three great events of the plan of salvation—the Creation, the Fall, and the Atonement.

What did Michael Chandler do?

A

“On the 3rd of July, Michael H. Chandler came to Kirtland to exhibit some Egyptian mummies. There were four human figures, together with some two or more rolls of papyrus covered with hieroglyphic figures and devices. As Mr. Chandler had been told I could translate them, he brought me some of the characters, and I gave him the interpretation.”

Q

Describe the four papyri:

A

(1) some papyri “preserved under glass,” described as “a number of glazed
slides, like picture frames, containing sheets of papyrus, with Egyptian
inscriptions and hieroglyphics” (1837)
(2) “a long roll of manuscript” described as the “roll of papyrus from which
our prophet translated the Book of Abraham.” It was further described: “The
roll was as dark as the bones of the Mummies, and bore very much the
same appearance; the opened sheets were exceedingly like thin
parchment, and of quite a light color. There were birds, fishes, and fantastic
looking people, interspersed amidst hyeroglyphics [sic]”
(3) “another roll”;
(4) and “two or three other small pieces of papyrus with astronomical
calculations, epitaphs, &c.”

Q

What do we not know? (2)
What about Gee and Draper?
What did John Taylor say?
What happened to the mummies and papyri after JS died?

A

Don’t’ know what percentage the prophet Joseph translated is
published. The location of the other original manuscripts that he
translated is unknown. (John Gee says 25%; Draper 242 = 15%).

John Taylor (Times and Seasons 1 Feb. 1843) said Joseph would
publish more. Martyred.

After Joseph’s death in 1844, the mummies and papyri remained
with his mother until she died in 1856. They then passed on to
Emma, who had remarried and remained in Illinois after the Saints
headed West.

were brought here. With them
were two papyrus rolls,
besides some other ancient
Egyptian writings. As no one
could translate these writings
they were presented to
President Smith…He said that
the rolls of papyrus contained
a sacred record kept by
Joseph in Pharaoh’s court in
Egypt and the teachings of
Father Abraham. God has so
ordered it that these writings
and mummies have been
brought into the Church.”

Q

What did Joseph Fielding Smith say about rest?

A

“What does it mean to enter into the rest of the
Lord? Speaking for myself, it means that through
the love of God I have been won over to Him, so
that I can feel at rest in Christ, that I may no more
be disturbed by every wind of doctrine, by the
cunning and craftiness of men, whereby they lie in
wait to deceive; and that I am established in the
knowledge and testimony of Jesus Christ, so that
no power can turn me aside from the straight and
narrow path that leads back into the presence of
God, to enjoy exaltation in His glorious kingdom;
that from this time henceforth I shall enjoy that
rest until I shall rest with Him in the heavens.”

19
Q

What did John Whitmer say?

What did Warren Parish say?

A

As John Whitmer observed, “Joseph the Seer saw these
Record[s] and by the revelation of Jesus Christ could
translate these records.”

“I have set by his side and penned down the
translation of the Egyptian Hieroglyphicks as he
claimed to receive it by direct inspiration of Heaven,”
wrote Warren Parrish, Joseph Smith’s scribe.

20
Q

What did JS say before his death?

A

In a discourse given on 16 June 1844, just before his
death, Joseph Smith said “I want to reason— I learned it
by translating the papyrus now in my house— I learned a
test. concerning Abraham & he reasoned concerng. the
God of Heaven— in order to do that sd. he— suppose
we have two facts that supposes that anotr. fact may
exist two men on the earth— one wiser than the other—
wod. shew that antr. who is wiser than the wisest may
exist— intelligences exist one above anotr. that there is
no end to it— if Abra. reasoned thus.”

21
Q

What countries were under Eygyptian influence?

A

Ur of Abraham was under strong Egyptian influence. The only area in Asia that
we know was under Egyptian influence at any time is an area comprising
approximately all of present-day Israel, Lebanon, and western Syria from Ebla
to the coast. In fact, southern Mesopotamia has never been under Egyptian
cultural or religious influence, and on that point alone, it could be ruled out as
the site of the Ur of Abraham. Abraham 1:10 Olishem

22
Q

What challenges did Abraham and Sarah face in their lives?

A

Abraham almost successfully sacrificed
They fled their home (Abraham 1:1)
Sarah in Pharaoh’s court (Abr. 2:21-25)
.Promises, but no children come, Hagar-Ishmael
Isaac to become the sacrifice
Priesthood power not just about ordinances
– revelation, family, stewardship

23
Q

What happens in Genesis 12:1?
What happens in Genesis 24:4?
Where is Olishem?

A

• Gen 12:1 flees homeland

Gen. 24:4 sends servant back to
homeland – Aram-Naharin

Abr. 1:10 Olishem near
Abraham’s homeland -

Mesopotamian and Egyptian
sources say Olishem near Ebla in
N. Syria.

24
Q

Who attested in approximate time and place of Abraham?

A

Elkanah, Libnah, and Korash all attested in approximate time and place of Abraham.

25
Q

What about Abraham’s homeland?

A

Abraham’s homeland was incorporated as part of the Egyptian empire under the
Twelfth Dynasty pharaohs Sesostris III and his son, Amenemhet III, but it was then
lost to the subsequent pharaohs. This provides an historical date for the events of the
first chapter of the Book of Abraham.

26
Q

Describe Abraham’s travels.

A

Because Abraham’s life was in danger, he left his
homeland, which was controlled by Egypt, and
crossed the Euphrates to Haran, which was
outside of Egyptian control (Abraham 1: 1, 2: 3–
4). After the reign of Amenemhet III, he left
Haran and went to Canaan, which was then no
longer under Egypt’s control (Abraham 2: 6–
18).

27
Q

Who replaced the Mesopotamians?
When was Abraham’s period?
Where did Eygpt have influence over?

A

Ca 1900-1800 Mesopotamia overrun. Replaced by NW Semitic speaking peoples.

Egyptian 12th Dynasty (1991- 1768) probably Abraham’s period.

Egypt had cultural influence
over most of Palestine,
Phoenicia, and southern Syria.

28
Q

What did Neal A. Maxwell say?

A

Along with three exceptionally faithful young
men—Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego
(see Daniel 3:12–30 )—Elder Neal A.
Maxwell discussed these three virtuous young women as “marvelous models on enduring
uncertainty and on trusting God”: “Matching
those three young men are three young women
whose names we do not have. They are
mentioned in the book of Abraham,
remarkable young women about whom I am
anxious to know more. They were actually
sacrificed upon the altar because ‘they would
not bow down to worship [an idol] of wood or
stone’ ( Abraham 1:11 ). Some day the faithful
will get to meet them”

29
Q

What did President Monson say?

A

Of course we will face fear, experience
ridicule, and meet opposition. Let us have
the courage to defy the consensus, the
courage to stand for principle. Courage,
not compromise, brings the smile of God’s
approval. Courage becomes a living and
an attractive virtue when it is regarded not
only as a willingness to die manfully, but as
the determination to live decently. A moral
coward is one who is afraid to do what he
thinks is right because others will
disapprove or laugh. Remember that all
men have their fears, but those who face
their fears with dignity have courage as
well.

30
Q

What is significant about the word “gee”?

A

It is possible that the genius behind this instruction lies in the
fact that in the period of Abraham, there was an Egyptian word
(snt) used to describe both “wife” and “sister” (Gee). The
Lord’s instruction may thus have allowed Pharaoh to hear what
he wanted to hear, while buying time for the plagues to set in
(Gen. 12:17) that would eventually lead to Abraham and
Sarai’s safe release.

31
Q

Who was Shem’s son?

Who are Shem’s sons?

A

Terah.

Abraham, Nahor, and Haran.

32
Q

What did the Lord do before circumcision?
What kind of wrong things were the people doing?
What did they misunderstand?

A

Before instituting the law of circumcision, the Lord
explained why He was establishing this token of the
covenant.

a. The people had left correct principles and forsaken the
true ordinances.
b. Baptism was one ordinance being incorrectly
observed.
c. The people were washing their children and sprinkling
blood in remembrance of Abel’s blood, which they taught
was shed for sins.

They misunderstood the relationship between
accountability of children and the Atonement of Jesus
Christ.

33
Q
Why was circumcision a thing?
Why is CT important?
Who was it for?
What did it signify?
What was it not?
A
2. Because of this apostasy, circumcision
was instituted.
a. It was a covenant token.
b. It was for the seed of Abraham.
c. It signified that children were not
accountable until they were eight years
old. (Gen. 17:11-12)
Not a cov. of entitlement, it was a cov. of
responsibility.
34
Q

Who can become parents of spiritual offspring?

A

On 30 June 1916, the First Presidency of the
Church (Joseph F. Smith, Anthon H. Lund,
and Charles W. Penrose) declared: “So far as
the stages of eternal progression and
attainment have been made known through
divine revelation, we are to understand that
only resurrected and glorified beings can
become parents of spirit offspring. Only such
exalted souls have reached maturity in the
appointed course of eternal life; and the spirits
born to them in the eternal worlds will pass in
due sequence through the several stages or
estates by which the glorified parents have
attained exaltation.”

35
Q

Who and where is Abraham’s posterity?

A

“Abraham received promises concerning his
seed…; both in the world and out of the world
should they continue as innumerable as the
stars.” (D&C 132:30.)

36
Q

What are the four promises given to Abraham?

A

Promise 1: “Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the
place where thou art northward, and southward, and
eastward, and westward: “For all the land which thou
seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever.
(Gen. 13:14–15.) (Lands to gather, inherit the earth)
Promise 2: “And I will make thy seed as the dust of the
earth: so that if a man can number the dust of the earth,
then shall thy seed also be numbered.” (Gen. 13:16;
24:60) (How can this be accomplished?)
Promise 3: “I will establish my covenant between me
and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for
an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to
thy seed after thee.” (Gen. 17:7, Abraham 1:2.)
Promise 4: “In thy seed shall all the nations of the earth
be blessed.” (Gen. 22:18.) (blessed?)

37
Q

What would Abraham’s seed do?

A

• His seed, or descendants, would receive the gospel
and bare the priesthood (see Abraham 2:9). (later
Jethro – descendant of Abraham through his wife
Keturah- delivers Priesthood to Moses)
• Through the ministry of his seed, “all the families of
the earth [would] be blessed, even with the blessings of
the Gospel, which are the blessings of salvation, even of
life eternal” (Abraham 2:11).

38
Q

Was everyone the same

in pre mortal existance. If not, explain why.

A

“The spirits of men were not equal. They may have had an equal start, and we know they were all innocent in the
beginning; but the right of free agency which was given to them enabled some to outstrip others, and thus,
through the eons of immortal existence, to become more intelligent, more faithful, for they were free to act for
themselves, to think for themselves, to receive the truth or rebel against it.”

39
Q

What is the Kokaubeum?

A

“the Lord revealed to Abraham, there are
differences in spirits. He spoke of the
Kokaubeam or the stars and of the difference
manifest in them, that one star was greater
and brighter than another until Kolob was
reached, which is near the throne of the
Eternal, and He said it was so with the spirits
of men.” (George Q. Cannon, Gospel Truth,
1:208.)

40
Q

What’s this thing about play on words?

A

The conversation between Abraham and the Lord
shifts from a discussion of heavenly bodies to
spiritual beings. This reflects a play on words that
Egyptians often use between a star (ach) and a
spirit (ich). The shift is done by means of a
comparison: “Now, if there be two things, one
above the other, and the moon be above the earth,
then it may be that a planet or a star may exist
above it; . . . as, also, if there be two spirits, and
one shall be more intelligent than the other”
(Abraham 3: 17– 18). In an Egyptian context, the
play on words would strengthen the parallel.

41
Q

Who does the Lord serve?

What will the Lord do for the righteous?

A

For thus saith the Lord, in the spirit of truth, [I
am merciful, gracious, and good unto those
[That fear me, and live for the life that’s to
come; [My delight is to honor the saints with
repose,. That serve me in righteousness true to the
end; [Eternal’s their glory, and great their
reward; [I’ll surely reveal all my myst’ries to
them,-[The great hidden myst’ries in my
kingdom stor’dFrom the council in Kolob, to time on the
earth. [And for ages to come unto them I will
show [My pleasure & will what my kingdom
will do: [

42
Q

Where is Kolob?

What does the creation account in Abraham avoid?

A

“According to this new revelation, there is a certain
great world, called Kolob, placed near one of the
celestial kingdoms, whose diurnal rotation takes place
once in a thousand of our years; and that celestial time
was measured by those celestial beings, by the
rotations of Kolob, hence one day with the Lord was a
thousand of our years.” (Orson Pratt, in Journal of
Discourses, 16:317.)

Creation Account in Abraham
avoids the use of “Day”.

43
Q

What four lessons does astronomy teach us?

A
  1. Worlds – governing bodies of the heavens – God is
    all powerful (20‐21)
  2. Our relationship to God (not fixed) – take our
place in His work – Fac. 3; 2:15
  3. Teaches the nature of Eternity – seek for that
    which is eternal ‐ estates
  4. Emphasizes the nature of the Abrahamic Cov. –
    posterity and family in eternity
44
Q

What has Dieter F. Utchdorf said?

A

“There is more to life than increasing its
speed.” In short, they focus on the things
that matter most.
Elder Dallin H. Oaks, in a recent general
conference, taught, “We have to forego
some good things in order to choose others
that are better or best because they develop
faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and strengthen
our families.”

The search for the best things inevitably
leads to the foundational principles of the
gospel of Jesus Christ—the simple and
beautiful truths revealed to us by a caring,
eternal, and all-knowing Father in Heaven.
These core doctrines and principles, though
simple enough for a child to understand,
provide the answer.
