A
  • process of evaluating quality of another scientists work
  • unpaid ( normally )
  • asses validity and quality and origniality and importance of articles / research before publication
  • maintain integrity of science by filtering out invalid or poor quality articles
  • using peer review adds value to articles
  • asses whether design and methods used are appropriate
  • share whether they believe it should be published in its original form or changed in some way by suggesting improvements
  • if this process was not dine research that is not correct may have negative concequances for affected individuals

Q

strengths

A

Promotes high-quality research, the process involves a review by the chief editor at least two experts in the same field therefore high standards are maintained throughout and research findings are published and shared are more credible further strengthening applications based on these findings

Also means that funding is not wasted on poor quality research and is allocated in the future to justifiable project

The process involves stripped scrutiny of work by multiple reviewers who are experts in the field therefore research buyers should be avoided such as the opinion of only one individual in terms of the original research conclusions and achievements of the other researchers increasing validity

Research was published without this process of review and checking poor research may be demented which would damage the integrity of the field of research all that of the discipline as a whole therefore helps prevent scientific fraud as submitted work is scrutinised

Q

weaknesses

A

There can be validity issues pair review can involve many amendments being made to the original submission and only statistically significant findings are published. This may result and research a bias as certain findings maybe overlooked this can also be called publication bias.

A normality of the researcher is not always maintained therefore conflicts of interest may rise therefore certain research may not be approved to further their own reputation or care for example if work in the same business

It may be difficult to find multiple researchers in the same field, especially if the field is very specific
