thematic analysis Flashcards

1
Q

what is thematic analysis

A

-Thematic analyses is used to analyse data qualitatively

It helps to identify, analyse and report patterns (themes)

It allows for flexibility in theories – not tied down to a specific theory

Also good for collecting rich, detailed data, along with complex descriptions

Q

how to carry out a thematic analysis

A

familiarise yourself with the data,
- know the data well so can find themes quickly

generate initial codes
- create initial codes ( word or a short phrase )
- highlighters or coloured pens to identify codes
- done systematically

searching for themes
- sort the codes into potential themes
- main or sub themes
- some codes may be disgarded
- arrange codes and themes on a3 paper and Draw connections between themes

reviewing themes
- refining themes
- some may need breaking down others join together
- check true meaning behind theme still there
- does the relationship between the themes refelect the data
- produce a thematic map

defining and naming themes
- detailed analysis of each theme, creating a narrative of data

producing the report
- write ip report
- consider audience
concise logical and non repetitive
- provide sufficient evidence for themes using evidence from data

Q

strengths

A

Point:
A key strength of thematic analysis is that it can achieve high inter-rater reliability.

Evidence:
This is because more than one coder can be used to reach agreement on the themes that emerge from the data.

Explanation:
This reduces the opportunity for subjectivity, as having multiple coders helps ensure that the findings are not just the interpretation of one individual. It also increases the likelihood that the same results will be produced if the study is replicated, which enhances the overall reliability and scientific credibility of the research.

PEE Paragraph 2: High Validity
Point:
Another strength is that thematic analysis can produce findings with high validity.

Evidence:
This is because qualitative data is often rich and detailed and comes straight from the respondent, reflecting their own experiences and perspectives.

Explanation:
If the researcher takes care not to over-interpret the data and instead focuses on accurately coding what the participant has said, this allows the ‘voice’ of the participant to be heard clearly. This leads to more credible and authentic conclusions, which reflect the true meanings and emotions expressed by participants.

Q

weaknesses

A

It’s highly time-consuming identifying limited numbers of themes that represent the data fully at the end is difficult. It requires high school which could delay research conclusions and applications which are beneficial to society. Perhaps quantitative data analysis is better

Researchers may have themes in mind when doing the initial coding themes may come from the researcher rather than from the data therefore research a bias
