What are the stages of the selection process ?
- Receive CV’S + application forms
- shortlisting
- hold interviews
- inform successful candidates
- offer the candidate the position
What is receive CV’S and application forms ?
When the business looks through potentially a large number of applications forms and CV’S and compare them to the job description and person specification
What is shortlisting ?
When the business will draw up a list of the candidates they wish to interview based on what applications best matched the job description and person specification
What is the stage hold interviews ?
This is when candidates are invited to the business and asked questions about their application
What are the interview formats ?
one to one - interviewed by one person
panel - group of people interviewing one person
group - group of candidates interviewed at one time
What are the advantages of holding interviews ?
- The business can ask additional or follow-up questions from their application
- The business can judge a candidate’s body language and appearance
- it is easy to compare candidates if same questions have been asked
What are disadvantages of holding interviews ?
- candidates can buckle under pressure and underperform on the day
- expensive to train staff how to interview
- it is time consuming to carry out multiple interviews
What is testing ?
A test will assess other skills and see how people respond to different situations. a test can confirm the information given in the application form
Examples of testing ?
Aptitude tests - ability in a certain skill
Psychometric test - attitude or character of a
candidate, usually through a set of
multiple-choice choice
Medical and physical ability - medical tests or physical
test will be required for
certain jobs (police,
army)
What are some cost of testing ?
- Expensive to explore resources and train staff
- off day, not preform to full potential
- Time consuming to design the test and set them up
What are some benefits of testing ?
- allows businesses to assess a large group at the same time
- Test specific skills related to the job role
- easy to compare candidates score to the same test
What is the stage offering the candidate the position ?
offer the successful candidate the position subject receiving a reference
What is a reference ?
A reference comes from the candidate’s previous employer. It will provide information about the candidate’s performance in their previous job
