Perception Flashcards
(19 cards)
Perception
Experiences result from stimulation of the senses, interpreting stimuli or sensory info
View point variance
People’s ability to recognize an object even when it is seen from different viewpoint.
Bottom up processing
Signal that start from senses and then go to brain.
Top down processing
Signal that originate in brain and then go to senses if needed
Unconscious inference Helmholtz’s theory
Our perception is influenced by unconscious assumptions that are most likely to occur and also influenced by previous experiences
Apparent(evidently) movement(max wertheimer)
(illusion) Movement is perceived, nothing is moving ,also called phi phenomenon.
gestalt principal
1.proximity
2.continuity
3.closure
4.similarity
5.common fate
6.figure and ground
7.connectedness
speech segmentation
the ability to tell when one word ends and second one starts in a convo.
Oblique effect
People can perceive horizontal and verticals more easily than other orientations(studies shows there’s more neuron for horizontal and vertical than oblique orientation)
Bayesian inference
(initial belief)Prior probability of an outcome
(available evidence) Likelihood of the outcome
Brain ablation
Removing part of the brain
Temporal lobe
Responsible for object identity ( What )
parietal lobe
responsible for object location(where)
Ventral pathway
The pathway that determine object identity and goes to temporal lobe, ventral means lower part of brain
Dorsal pathway
The pathway that leads to parietal lobe is responsible for objects location, dorsal means back or upper surface
Perception pathway
Ventral pathway, visual cortex to temporal lobe
Action pathway
Dorsal pathway ,visual cortex to parietal lobe
mirror neuron
Mirror neurons are a type of brain cell that fire both when a person performs an action and when they observe someone else performing the same action.(inferior frontal / parietal lobe)
heuristics
is process by which human use mental shortcuts to arrive at conclusions.
