9
Q

What airspeed must you fly at to achieve max glide ratio?

Q

How does weight affect max glide distance?

A

Weight does NOT affect glide distance. It causes a higher descent ate/airspeed. You will glide the same distance as a lighter aircraft, but it will take you less time to glide said distance.

Q

How does configuration affect max glide distance?

A

Decreases glide distance and glide airspeed

Remember configuration changes decrease L/D Max

Q

What is Specific Fuel Consumption

A

SFC = FF/Thrust

The rate of fuel used per pound of thrust, it measures turbojet engine efficiency

16
Q

How does an increase in Altitude affect SFC?

A

Decreases SFC due to a temperature decrease

17
Q

How does an decrease in temperature effect SFC?

A

It decreases SFC

18
Q

When is a turbojet engine most efficient generally?

A

At high altitudes where the temperature is lower and high power settings

19
Q

Where does max range occur on this graph?

A

Max Range occurs at a point on a line from the origin tangent to the T_R Curve.

20
Q

How does an increase in weight affect max range?

A

Range increases if the extra weight is due to fuel, but decreases if the extra weight is payload other than fuel

21
Q

How does an increase in altitude affect max range?

A

Maximum range performance increases with altitude

22
Q

How does configuration affect max range?

A

Lowering the landing gear or speed brake increases the thrust required, which
shifts the curve up, decreasing max range

23
Q

How does wind effect max range?

A

Winds do not affect endurance (time airborne), but they do affect distance traveled and can affect the conditions necessary to maximize range. As you would expect, a headwind reduces range by reducing ground speed (which would be less than TAS), while a tailwind increases range

24
Q

How does weight effect max endurance?

A

You should consider weight factors other than fuel when analyzing the effect of weight. Obviously, more fuel means
increased endurance. A heavier aircraft achieves maximum endurance at a higher airspeed than a lighter aircraft of the same type.

Max endurance decreases

25
Q

How does configuration affect max endurance?

A

Lowering gear, speed brake, and/or flaps decreases endurance

26
Q

How does altitude affect max endurance?

A

Endurance increases with altitude

27
Q

What is endurance?

A

Endurance is the total time an aircraft can remain airborne in level flight under specified conditions.

28
Q

Max glide speed in a T-38 with 2000 lbs gas?

A

Max glide speed = 230 KCAS + 1 knot for every 100 lbs of fuel.
Therefore, T-38 with 2000 lbs gas is: 230 KCAS + 20 = 250 KCAS

29
Q

What is, generally, the T38 climb schedule?

A

The tech order climb
schedule, described in the Diversion Range Summary chart, is essentially 500 KCAS at sea level minus 30 KCAS per
5,000 feet.

30
Q

What is max range AOA?

A

0.18

31
Q

What is max endurance AOA?

A

0.3

32
Q

What is max range?

A

The best ratio of velocity to fuel flow. This airspeed gives us the highest TAS to TR ratio
