The homestead act allowed for incoming settlers from the east to cheapily obtain 160 acres of land. Soon, even more land was allowed with the conditions of making the land better and more prosperous with trees

At a strike of labour promoted by the AFL, someone threw a bomb and many people died. Through an injustice trial, 7 people were sentenced to death for knowing the bomber. This allowed business owners to install fear within the public of AFL members associated with anarchy

Carnegie and Henry Frick cut wages at a now uneeded steel industry. In strike workers forced stikebreakers out of their town as a temporary success, but the state government sent in troops that sent them back to low wage work
