Period
A formal unit made up of two or sometimes more phrases
Phrases form antecedent consequent relationship
Antecedent phrases : weaker cadence, feels open example HC
Consequence phrase : stronger cadence feels closed example PAC
Period also
Can be pareellek or contrasting
Parallel period
Parallel : very similar motivic material especially at the beginning of phrase
Contrasting period
Contrasting : different motivic material
Parallels period
a. HC. a’. PAC
Same motivic period therefore is parallel period but if contrasting material there for than it is contrasting.
Contrasting Period
a. HC. b. PAC
If second b phrase has different melody/ harmony than it is b rather than a’
Three phrase period
Adds an extra phrase
May have two antecedent phrases
Weak/open
May have two consequent phrases
Strong/closed
Double period
Commonly four phrases
Antecedent/consequent exists between two 2 phrase groups
Rather than only two phrases
Cadence at end of phrase 2 and phrase 4 have the open/closed relationship
Contrasting double period
a. HC. a. HC. b. HC. a’. PAC
Contrasting period b. and. a'
Sentence
A musical structure of various size
Characterized by three parts initial idea, immediate repeat or variation of initial idea, and drive forwards cadence
Durations parts is often in ratio of 1:1:2
