Perioheral nerve lesions Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is the middle finger dermatome?
C7
What happens in Erbs palsy and what causes it?
damage to C5, C6 nerve roots
Excessive pulling of neck during child birth
What are the symptoms of Erbs palsy?
waiters tip adducted shoulder medially rotated arm extended elbow pronated forearm
What happens in Klumkes palsy and what causes it?
damage to inferior trunk of brachial plexus (C8,T1- ulnar nerve)
Upper limb is pulled during childbirth
May also be associated with Horners syndrome
What does Klumpkes palsy cause?
Paralysis of most of intrinsic muscles of the hand and ulnar flexors of the wrist and digits = claw hand
hyperextension at the metacarpophalangeal joints and flexion at the interphalangeal joints
Due to paralysed lumbricals of digits 4 and 5
Cubital tunnel syndrome
compression of ulnar nerve
Caused by repetitive elbow flexion and extension
same symptoms as Klimpkes palsy + pain
Horners syndrome?
Ptosis miosis anhidrosis vasodilation Sympathetic neurones supplying head originate from T1 and may be damaged in the same way as Klumpkes palsy
Radial nerve palsy?
wrist drop - paralysis of extensors
triceps weakened not paralysed
radial nerve damage in spiral goove of the humerus
Median nerve injury at elbow
damaged by supra condylar fractures or pronator teres syndrome
Supplied majority of forearm flexors but not FCulnaris and medial half of flexor digitorum profundus , thenar and lateral 2 lumbricals of the hand
Hand of benediction
inability to flex digits 1-3
able to flex 4 and 5 weakly due to ulnar nerve
