Pg 6-15 Cardiovascular system Flashcards
(41 cards)
What is the Cardiovascular System?
Consists of the heart and blood vessels that circulate blood throughout the body, delivering water, oxygen, and nutrients to cells, and removing waste products such as carbon dioxide.
What are the main components of the Cardiovascular System?
- Heart
- Blood vessels
- Arteries
- Veins
- Capillaries
What are the functions of the Cardiovascular System?
Circulates blood, delivers nutrients and oxygen, removes waste products.
How many chambers does the heart have?
Four chambers
What are the two upper chambers of the heart called?
Atria
What are the two lower chambers of the heart called?
Ventricles
What is the function of the right ventricle?
Pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs
What is the function of the left ventricle?
Pumps oxygenated blood to the body
What divides the heart into two pumps?
Septum
What type of blood does the left pump of the heart contain?
Oxygenated blood
What type of blood does the right pump of the heart contain?
Deoxygenated blood
What is the role of the heart valves?
Allow blood to travel in only one direction, preventing backflow.
What are the names of the two main heart valves?
- Bicuspid valve (left side)
- Tricuspid valve (right side)
Where is the heart located?
Slightly to the left of the center of the chest, protected by the rib cage.
What is the size of an adult heart approximately compared to?
The size of a large fist
What is a heartbeat?
The sound heard when listening to the heart, indicating one contraction and relaxation.
What is heart rate (HR) measured in?
Heart beats per minute
What is systole?
The phase when the heart contracts and forces blood out.
What is diastole?
The phase when the heart relaxes and fills with blood.
What constitutes the cardiac cycle?
The movement of blood through the heart in one heartbeat, consisting of systole and diastole.
What percentage of blood volume is made up of blood cells?
45 percent
What percentage of blood volume is plasma?
55 percent
What are the functions of blood?
- Transports oxygen and glucose
- Carries waste products like carbon dioxide and lactate
- Plays a role in thermoregulation
How much blood does an individual have approximately?
4–5 litres
