MOA/AE/use
MOA: blocks plasmodium heme synthesis
AE: pruritus in dark skinned, exacerbation of psoriasis, irreversible retinopathy
use: sensitive malaria (NOT P. falc (resistance too high)
mefloquine
AE/use
AE: neuropsychiatric (avoid if mental health hx), QT prolong
use: prophylaxis and tx of resistant malaria
primaquine
AE/use
AE: acute hemolysis if G6PD, avoid in pregnancy
use: prevention of relapse malaria
tafenoquine
AE/use
AE: acute hemolysis if G6PD, avoid in pregnancy/mental illness hx
use: NEW, prophylaxis and cure
combination taken daily for prophylaxis/tx of Pf
atovaquone/proguanil
AE: contraindicated w/ renal dysfunction
artesunate
AE/use
AE: gen well tolerated
use: in COMBO for uncomplicated, or IV for severe malaria (first line)
severe pf, chloroquine resistant
artesunate (IV)
If G6PD, avoid
primaquine
