Photorespiration Flashcards
(5 cards)
What is Rubisco?
• an enzyme which usually binds to CO2, can also buy 202 and bring it into the Kelvin cycle. This is called photorespiration
What happens when there is no carbon that is being brought into the Calvin cycle?
• the plant cell will spend ATP and NADPH but it will not produce glucose or G3 P as it will need additional atoms of carbon to do this
What happens in C4 plants?
• a chemical reaction that will allow C4 plants to physically separate. The light dependent reactions in the light independent reactions (Calvin cycle).
• the light dependent reactions take place in the mesophyll cells
• CO2 is then converted to malate as it is taken into the bundle sheath cells that are around the veins of belief
• this is where the light independent reactions take place
What happens in CAM plants?
• does not physically separate the light dependent in light independent reactions into different cells
• CAM plant separate these processes through TIMING during the course of the day
• still matter will open when temperatures are cooler and have their gas exchange current night. The additional chemical reaction allows for CO2 to be temporary stored as malate until daylight when light dependent reactions start up again
In photorespiration, do you need to keep oxygen away from rubisco?
- yes!
