Photosynthesis Flashcards
(29 cards)
what is the word equation. for photosynthesis
carbon dioxide + water ———-> glucose +oxygen
sunlight
where is the waxy cuticle
top of a leaf
label a diagram of a leaf
cgp page 19
why are leaves broad
large surface area exposed to light
where is most of the chloroplast found and why
in the palisade layer. Near the top of the leaf so get the most exposure to light
which layer of the leaf is transparent
upper epidermis
what is the point in the waxy cuticle
to reduce water loss by evaporation
what are the limiting factors of photosynthesis
light intestiy
concentration of co2
and temperature
what is the symbol equation for photosynthesis
6CO2 +6H20——-> C6H12O6+602
what effect does little light have on photosynthesis
slows it down
what effect does to little co2 have on photosynthesis
slows it down
what effect does temperature have on photosynthesis
higher temperature faster photosynthesis
until too warm (over about 45 degrees)
enzymes denatured
rate of photosynthesis rapidly decreases
How to test a leaf for startch
- kill leaf boil it in water
- put leaf in boiling tube with ethanol heat in boiling bath (this gets rid of any chlorophyll) the leaf should now be a pale white colour
- rinse the leaf in cold water and add a few drops of iodine solution. if starch is present iodine will turn black
what does startch test show
weather photosynthesis is occurring
how to test the rate of photosynthesis
measuring oxygen production using a syringe and a rubber tube and recording the bubbles movement
name 3 main mineral ions for growth in plants
Nitrates
phosphates
potassium
magnesium is also needed but only in small amounts
what do multicellular organisms need
transport systems
what are plants two main transport systems
Xylem tubes
phloem tubes
what do xylem tubes transport
The xylem carry water and mineral salts from the roots up the shoot to the leaves in the transpiration stream
what do phloem tubes transport
The phloem transport sugars like sucrose, and amino acids from where they’re made in the leaves to other parts of the plant
this movement of food substances around the plant is known as translocation
which part of the plant takes in water
root hair cells
draw a diagram of a root hair cell

what process does a root hair cell use to absorb water
osmosis
what is transpiration
the loss of water from the plant
