1
Q
What is phylogeny?
A
-
2
Q
Relationship between classification and Phylogeny
A
- classification is placing living organisms into categories based on sim
- Phylogeny is the evolutionary relationship between organisms. It reveals what group an organism is related to and how closely related organisms are.
- modern classification reflects phylogeny
3
Q
What is an advantage of phylogenetic classification?
A
- continuous tree that doesn’t force organisms into specific taxonomic groups where they don’t quite fit.
- no overlap between the groups produced so not misleading like Hierarchy of Linnaean as two groups in same level are the same.
4
Q
What are phylogenetic trees?
A
- map evolutionary relationships between organisms and their histories
- relative positions of branching points show distance of shared common ancestors.
- relative distances between vertical lines shows closeness of species’ evolution from common ancestral branches.
- proximity of species to each other indicates the closeness of their evolutionary relationship.
5
Q
What does phylogeny indicate over time?
A
- indicates lines of descent and divergence
- oldest species is shown at the left of the tree
- most recent species are shown at the ends of the branches (right).
