Variation Flashcards
(10 cards)
1
Q
What genetic factors cause variation?
A
- genes and variation in allelles an individual possesses cause different phenotypes
- mutation = change to DNA base seq lead to diff allelles
- meiosis - new comb of allelles in gametes (independent assortment and crossing over)
- random fertilisation = new combo of alleles in zygotes
- random mating
2
Q
What is variation?
A
- diff in characteristics between individuals within any given pop
3
Q
What is intraspecific variation?
A
- variation between organisms within a species
4
Q
what is interspecific variation?
A
- variation between members of different species
5
Q
what is continious data?
A
- no distinct cat
- effected by env
- immediate values (take any value in a range)
- influenced by several genes (polygenetic)
- histogram or line
6
Q
What is discontinuous data?
A
- distinct cat
- determined by one/few genes
- unaffected by environment
- no immediate values (certain val)
- bar chart
7
Q
What environmental factors cause variation?
A
- environment organism live
- soil conditions
- pH
- light
- temp
- water
8
Q
what are polygenes?
A
- different genes at diff loci contribute to aspect of phenotype
- act together = observable variation
9
Q
What is normal distribution?
A
-mean, median mode are same
-bell shaped and symmetrical around a central mean value
- continuous variation
10
Q
what is standard deviation?
A
measure of spread of values from the mean
smaller = consistent and clustered around mean
larger = inconsistent, widely spread
