Physical Factors Flashcards
(21 cards)
Explain two negative effect that coronary heart disease has on your physical health?
-Chest pain due to the heart not getting enough oxygenated blood due to narrowed arteries
-Heart failure due to heart muscle weakening causing the heart to be unable to pump blood efficiently
Name two inherited conditions
-Sickle cell disease
-Cystic Fibrosis
Name 3 types of physical ill health
-Cardiovascular disease
-Obesity
-Type 2 diabetes
Name 2 types of mental ill health
-Stress
-anxiety
Types of sensory impairment
Blindness
Hearing loss
Loss of smell
Loss of taste
Loss of touch
Example physical abilities that effect you permanently
Limb amputation
Example physical abilities that effect you temporarily
-broken bone
-surgery
Example of two physical effects of sickle cell disease?
-episodes of severe pain due to sickle shaped red blood cells blocking blood flow in blood vessels
-anemia (leading to tiredness) due to reduced number of healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen round the body
Examples of physical effects of Cystic fibrosis?
-frequent chest infections due to sticky mucus in lungs blocking air flow and trapping bacteria
-problems breathing preventing an individual doing exercise or physically draining activities due to a build up of sticky mucus in the lungs
Name two negative effects of cardiovascular disease?
-can lead to heart failure due to heart muscle weakening so can no longer pump blood efficiently
-Angina/ chest pain due to the heart not getting sufficient oxygen
Negative physical effects of obesity?
-breathing problems due to fat build up around the neck
-arthritis and joint pain due to extra weight putting strain on joints and muscles
Negative physical effects of type 2 diabetes?
-blindness or blurred vision due to high sugar levels damaging blood vessels in the eye (retina)
-fatigue due to body being unable to use glucose for energy
What are the long term negative effects of stress?
-prolonged stress can cause heart attacks as it elevates heart rate and blood pressure causing plaque build up
-weakens the immune system as stress impairs T-cells (type of white blood cells) for fighting of pathogens
Short term physical effects of anxiety?
-sweaty hands as stress triggers hormone adrenaline which stimulates sweat glands
-faster heartbeat due to the hormone adrenaline
Short term negative effects of stress?
-Vomiting due to the body activating fight or flight defence
-dizziness due to releasing hormones like adrenaline and cortisol which disrupts signals in the inner ear
Long term negative physical effects of anxiety?
-insomnia due to increase in adrenaline and cortisol hormone levels preventing the body from relaxing
-weight lose due to stress causing a person to experience a lack of appetite
Physical effects of physical disability
-reduced mobility may prevent a person being physically active
-can’t carry out personal care due to injury impacting motor and fine motor skills
Intellectual effects of physical disability
-behavioural disability’s may make it harder for an individual to concentrate during school/ work
-conditions like dyslexia may mean a person is unable to have certain jobs
Emotional effects of physical disability
-may feel they don’t fit in and develop low self-esteem
-lack independence may cause a person to feel stressed and frustrated with themselves
Social effects are of physical disability?
-some behavioural disability’s effects social and communication skills (harder to socialise)
-lack of mobility may mean an individual feels isolated as they are unable to join in with physical activity
