Physiological Indicators Flashcards
(25 cards)
Normal Range for an adult resting heart rate?
Between 60-100bpm
What things can affect a person’s resting heart rate?
-a person’s overall health
-being overweight
-age
-if they’ve done exercise
If someone has a higher resting heart rate than the normal range, what does it mean?
The person is unfit and overweight
What are the short term risks of an abnormal heart rate?
-shortness of breath as heart doesn’t have enough time to refill will blood so reduces the amount of oxygenated blood going to the lungs
-dizziness lack of deoxygenated blood flow to the brain
-chest pain as heart doesn’t have time to refill between beats leading to reduced oxygen
Long term risks of an abnormal heart rate?
-increase risk of cardiovascular problems (heart attack or stroke) as heart can’t adequately refill with blood between beats and overtime cause blood clots or reduced blood flow
-risk of heart failure because the heart becomes too weak and can’t pump enough blood around the body.
What is systolic pressure?
The pressure when the heart pushes out (first number)
What is the diastolic pressure?
The pressure when the heart rests between beats (second number)
What is the range for low blood pressure?
90/60 or lower
What is the ideal blood pressure range?
90/60 to 120/80
What is the range for pre-high blood pressure?
120/80 to 140/90
What’s the range for high blood pressure?
140/90 or higher
What are the short term risks of high blood pressure?
-headaches due to increased pressure in the brain
-nose bleeds due to burst blood vessel
Long term risks of high blood pressure?
-heart attack as damage to the arteries makes them harden and thick which decreases blood flow to the heart
-stroke due to arteries supplying blood to the brain, bursting
Short term risk of low blood pressure?
-dizziness as it reduces the amount of oxygenated blood to the brain
-blurred vision due to reduces blood flow to the optic nerve
Long term risks of low blood pressure?
-Extremely low blood pressure may lead to shock as the body’s organs don’t get enough blood or oxygen (life threatening)
-a weak pulse due to less blood circulated throughout the body
How to calculate BMI
Mass in kg divided by height in meters squared
BMI range for a person who is underweight?
Below 18.5
BMI for an individual with a healthy weight?
18.5 to 24.9
BMI for a person who is overweight?
25 to 29.9
BMI for a person who is obese?
30-39.9
BMI for a person who is severely obese?
40 or above
Short term risks of being overweight or obese?
-reduced mobility excess of body fat puts extra strain on joints increasing stiffness and lack of motion
-shortness of breath as excess fat in the chest and abdomen restricts lung expansion causing shallow breathing
- high blood pressure as excess weight puts strain on the heart requiring it to work harder to pump blood
Long term affects of being overweight or obese?
-cardiovascular problems (heart attack or stroke due to high cholesterol and high blood pressure
-joint problems (arthritis) due to excess fat putting extra strain on joints
-type 2 diabetes excess body fat leads to insulin resistance which impairs the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar levels
Short term risks of being under weight?
-feeling weak or tired as the body isn’t getting enough calories or nutrients to function properly
-woman’s periods may become irregular or stop due to disrupting hormone balance (decrease in oestrogen)
-weaker immune system as your body isn’t getting the correct amount of nutrients and vitamins
